Ghost Agency: Women’s Rights in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism
With Mexico as its case, this project explores innovative artistic methods to develop technological tools in favour of women exposed to social constraints and systemic violence.
About the project
The project aims to create a safe digital platform for women affected by violence through artistic practice, research and cyber security strategies. Exploring capacities for social cohesion beyond the tech sector, this presents both an antidote to surveillance culture and the problem of impunity concerning violence against women in Mexico. As an advocacy for women’s rights in the digital age, this project outlines a novel organisation model and technology with the potential to transform the premise for all human lives.
The project is led by Danish artist and organiser Gro Sarauw and Mexican artist and technologist Anni Garza Lau.
The project also involves a broad range of relevant cultural actors from Mexico, Norway, Denmark and the USA being; Centro de Cultura Digital (MX); CENTRO MUJERES (MX); Art Hub Copenhagen (DK) EthosLab, ITU (DK); ARIEL- Feminisms in the Aesthetics (DK); Kunsthall Trondheim (NO); Rønnebæksholm Kunsthal (DK); Pastor Projects (MX); and El nopal Press (US).
About the applicant
Gro Sarauw is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. As an artist and organiser, she works with concepts such as Spatial Justice in relation to organisation, digitality and infrastructure that can bring about structural change.
Anni Garza Lau is a transdisciplinary artist and programmer who lives and works in Mexico City. Her practice focuses on questioning the use of technological devices in everyday life and its effects on the development of identity, privacy, social behavior and the perception of reality.
