The 3Ecologies Project was launched in 2020 by Brian Massumi and Erin Manning. In this ethos of alongsideness, 3Ecologies develops techniques for research-creation at the intersection of the environmental, conceptual and social ecologies.
3E is located on a large tract of forest three hours north of Montreal. It is off-grid with two solar houses, a rustic solar cabin and a sugar shack. Over the past three years, significant work has occurred: we have hosted local and international events on smell (2022), becoming-earth (2021), performing ecologies (2022, 2023), dramaturgies of blackness (2022), wild clay foraging and pit firing (2023). We have also held writingz workshops, philosophical reading groups, residencies, and have hosted students, artists and scholars each year for the sugaring off (3E has 860 tapped maple trees).
With a concerted focus on neurodiversity and other ways of knowing, Para-Pedagogies of Resistance is built on the figure of the emissary to develop para-pedagogical experimentation. The para-pedagogical weaves between philosophy, artistic practice, and pedagogy proper. Para-pedagogies are not frontal: they do not necessarily expose themselves directly as “teaching” or “learning” environments. To study them is therefore to attune to their own emergent logics, to their locality, to the precise ways in which their practices are engendered and sustained.
Para-Pedagogies of Resistance is a living study of projects that are path-breaking with respect to how they enact new ways of knowing in the transversality of the social, the conceptual and the environmental. Through the movements of emissaries and the subsequent workshops and research-creation events, the hope is that the shared commitment to transversality will seed resonances between the various projects, creating future collaborations amongst them and enriching individual research outputs.
