The objective of this project is to strengthen the capacity to protect, promote and sustainably manage cultural heritage through supporting the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, in a collaborative project between Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic countries.
The region (Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic countries) is united by many shared cultural heritage themes, and we wanted to highlight and enhance this rich heritage. At the same time, we aim to use resources more efficiently. Rather than each country working independently with Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, it is far more effective and beneficial to plan and implement development collaboratively across borders.
We aim to strengthen cultural heritage cooperation in the region by using Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme as a framework for collaboration. Our goal is to produce effective and replicable tools that can concretely support the work of cultural routes throughout the region.
The project is a collaboration between
The Finnish Heritage Agency (FI)
The Swedish National Heritage Board (SE)
Ministry of Culture, Republic of Estonia (EE)
The project displays an impressive frugality and realism with regards to the budgeting, clearly and outlining the project’s concrete activities. The project is deeply anchored in the co-operation between the involved countries, and aims to influence the management of cultural heritage on a structural level (museums, cultural heritage institutions, universities, NGOs, and destination management organizations).
“Launched by the Council of Europe in 1987, the Cultural Routes demonstrate, by means of a journey through space and time, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe contributes to a shared and living cultural heritage.”
