NAARCA envisions artist residencies as leaders in environmental action by practising sustainable behaviours in spaces where private, professional, and public life intertwine. Their aim is to transform this opportunity into a sector-wide responsibility, advocating for genuine change.

NAARCA launched in Novermber 2021 at Cove Park during COP26, co-led by Cove Park and Saari Residence, to build long-term collaboration between the Nordics and Scotland on climate action. The network of seven residencies, united by shared climate, history, and language, formed subgroups focused on Art Commissions, Knowledge & Production, and Pedagogy.
Building on workshops, evaluation meetings, podcasts, essays, and other work started, NAARCA sought funding to continue the work in three different areas:
The next phase of the project will involve residency exchanges between the NAARCA partners, broadening the scope and the perspectives of those involved.
Additionally, the toolkits NAARCA develops are translated into other languages and adapted to local contexts. At once a common mission, with differences in contexts, needs and available resources, the work of adapting and translating toolkits for sustainable residency action is both time- and resource-consuming.
