Sustaining the Otherwise is a research and artistic project about restitution, reparation and transformation, taking place in multiple locations in Europe and Africa. The project offers a space for artists, activists, scholars and writers to be in dialogue and to explore the topic of restitution in relation to both material and immaterial culture. Focusing on artistic practices, the program includes residencies, talks, conferences, publications, performances and exhibitions.
A continuation of Wendt’s and Alhaag’s research and curatorial practices, Sustaining the Otherwise addresses the decolonial and the afterlives of cultural heritage objects by bringing together artists, activists, scholars and communities Global South and the geographical diasphora. These voices are crucial to ensure a successful re-imagining and re-definition of how we think about the carre, afterlife and placement of illegally abtained artefacts and cultural objects in European collections.
The project seeks to make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing discourse around restitution by creating a platform for critical engagement and a breathing space for artistic practices to unfold organically, with the intention of stretching the concept of restitution beyond a discussion about museum practice and policy. This will be achieved through an interdisciplinary program including residencies, conferences, talks, artist activations, performances, publications and exhibitions.
