The SEA Arts Censorship Database Project is an archiving and monitoring system, designed to track violations of artistic freedom in Southeast Asia in 6 countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Oppression of artistic expression is a thin slice of the overall oppressive environment in Southeast Asia, compared to the more visible targeting of journalists and human rights defenders. Yet, the status of a poet or filmmaker reveals the soft edges of creeping oppression well before it spreads and deepens across society.
Using a unique research tool developed to capture the specific ways that arts and cultural violations are targeted by state and non-stage agents, ours is the only monitoring system designed to fit local needs, run by local experts. The findings, reports, and research process is used to activate meaningful exchanges and dialogues about artistic freedom artists with rights organisations, advocates and policy makers internationally via an online forum, reports and other engagements.
